Popular Poker Games
One of the great things about poker is that there are so many variations to the game, you can never get tired of it. Whether you’re playing in a casino, live poker room, online poker room or just a friendly game, there are games for every taste: quick games, longer games, limit, no limit. Here are some of the most popular poker games.
Probably the most popular game around is Texas Holdem. You have to be living in a cave not to be familiar with holdem. It’s on television just about every day; there are tournaments going on around the world, or, if you don’t like traveling, there are online Texas Holdem tournaments going on twenty-four/seven. Texas Holdem is a variation on Seven Card Stud. You’ve got two hidden hole cards and five community cards laid out on the table for everyone to see. Texas Holdem has a lot of action, but there’s a lot of strategy involved. In Limit Holdem betting amounts are predetermined. No Limit Holdem means no limit, you can bet as many poker chips as you’ve got.
Omaha is a game that is becoming more popular all the time. It is similar to Texas Holdem, but each player gets four hole cards instead of two. You still only get to use two of your hole cards to make your final hand. Omaha Hi-Lo is a variation where the pot is split between the high hand and the low hand. The low hand has to be “qualified,” which means five cards under the rank of 8 with no pairs. If no low hand qualifies, then the high hand takes the whole pot.
Seven Card Stud is the game that started it all. In seven card stud, each player is dealt two cards face down and one card face up. After a round of betting, the next three cards are dealt to each player, face up, with a round of betting after each card. The final card is dealt face down or “down and dirty.” Seven Card Stud can also be played as a High Low game with the pot split. Usually A2345 is the lowest hand (straights and flushes don’t count for the low).
