Changes in Poker Terminology: Annoyances and Grievances

The poker world has changed a lot in recent years and one area not left unscathed by these changes would be the terminology of poker games.  For starters, poker games and gambling activities used to take place at ‘clubs’.  Now, such events occur at casinos.  Another terminology based change in the poker world is the fact that now physically located casinos are referred to as brick-and-mortar ones.  Poker language, in this respect, can be slightly misleading.  How many physically located casinos have you frequented which have actually been constructed of brick and mortar?  They are usually much more elaborate and better constructed.  These are some very subtle yet telling change in the poker world and there are many more where these came from.

Have you heard the term ‘cut-off’ in the poker world lately?  No longer simply denim pants cut into shorts, when used in poker rooms a cut-off position is the player or seat at the poker table which is one off the button in the poker game.  In the ‘good ol’ days’ this would have been referred to in the poker world as two seats from the button.  Another new term in the poker world is ‘domination’.  This poker language term is used when situations occur such as one player at the poker table holding AK and one with AQ.  The AK hand dominated the AQ hand at the poker table.

Sit and go poker tournaments and poker games are also new in to poker language.  This name is similar to the one-table satellite games in the olden days, but sit and go’s in today’s poker world may be used for points into other tournaments or multiple spots and have different payouts.  These events take place in the satellite areas of a casino physically located and at many online poker websites.  In poker language, more events are clarifying that their poker games are ‘fixed’ to differentiate them from no-limit games.

Poker language can be subtle, but it can also be confusing and off-putting.  In order to avoid miscommunications, it can be helpful to understand the subtle nuances and new organization of poker language in the poker world.  Players will often appreciate giving attention to this detail as they play and engage in chats with other players about the experiences they take part in, such as sitting in the cut-off position.
