Number one, what beats what? If you’re playing in a casual game with several newbies, you can bet someone will have a “cheat sheet” telling what different poker hands are ranked. (And often what the difference is between a straight, flush, and a full house.) Here’s that info so you can learn it and not have to carry around a cheat sheet. We’ll go from lowest hand to highest.

High card. Any hand that doesn’t even have a measly pair is decided by the high card (say an Ace or King). If two or more players have the same high card, it is decided by the next highest card from their hands.
One Pair. Two cards of the same rank, like JJ or 66. If two players both have the same pair, high card wins.
Two Pair. Just what it sounds like. For example, two Jacks and two tens.

Three of a Kind. Three cards of the same rank, such as three Queens or three sevens.
Straight. Five cards in a numerical sequence, such as 45678. The Ace can be high or low, as in AKQJ10 and 5432A.
Flush. Five cards of the same suit. Flushes are ranked by the top card and then the next so AQ843 of hearts beats AQ752 of clubs.

Full House. Three of a kind and one pair in the same hand, like QQQAA or AAA88. They are ranked by the three of a kind so JJJ33 beats 99955.

Four of a Kind. Four cards of the same rank – AAAA3.
Straight Flush. Five cards of the same suit in numerical sequence, so 98765 of hearts.
Royal Flush. The highest poker hand. It is AKQJT off the same suit.

Texas Holdem Basics Part 2
If you’ve read Texas Holdem Part 1, you’ve got some money in the pot (the blind bets) and the hole cards are dealt. What happens next? This is where the fun starts, the first round of betting. This is called the Pre-Flop because the bet takes place before, you guessed it, The Flop. Betting starts with the player to the left of the Big Blind. In the first round you aren’t allowed to “check” (which means take no action), but you can Bet, Call, Raise, or, if your cards stink, Fold. Once all the players have put the same amount in the pot, play continues.

The Flop
The Dealer deals three cards face up on the poker table. The players use these along with their hole cards to see what kind of hand they have…or could have – with a lucky draw later. Then there is another round of betting. The first player to the left of the dealer starts. If you’re not sure about your chances, you might “check,” which means no bet. Someone will bet, someone might raise them, and you have to meet the amount of the bet and raises, so again, all players put the same amount into the pot or fold before the round ends. The same rules for betting and raising apply in every round from now on.

The Turn
After the excitement of The Flop, the dealer deals out one more community card on the poker table. All the players have one more card they can use to build their hand. Another round of betting takes place and then we move on to…

The River
Sometimes called Fifth Street, because the Fifth and last community card is dealt face up on the table and another round of betting takes place.

The Showdown
Each player uses five of the seven cards to make the best possible poker hand they can. You don’t even have to use your hole cards if the community cards make a better hand. (That’s known as “playing the board.”) The final bet is called, players show their hands and the winner is revealed. If you know you’re beaten, you don’t have to show your cards.

To get the pot started, Texas Holdem is played with two Blinds. No, not some kind of window treatment. The Blinds refer to the two players sitting to the left of the dealer who place “blind” bets on the upcoming hand. The Small Blind (usually the first player to the left) is half the minimum bet at the table. The Big Blind (the second player to the left) is the minimum table bet. So, if the minimum bet is $5, the Big Blind is $5 and the Small Blind is $2.50.
