Don’t Leave Money on the Table – Texas Holdem Betting Tips
When playing Texas Holdem, it’s always a pleasant surprise to find yourself with great cards. Too many poker players lose their heads. They bet big and leave money– or poker chips — on the table. Their excitement has chased all the chickens from the coop. When you’ve got a strong hand, here are some poker strategies to maximize your winnings.
Check first – then raise
You know your cards are strong, so check, and let someone else make a bet. That gives you a chance to raise when the turn comes back your way. Say you are looking at the Queen of hearts and 10 of clubs. The flop is Qs – Jh-5d. You check. The next players check too. A player in a late position bets. THEN you raise. The idea behind this Texas Holdem strategy is that you make it too costly for someone trying to draw a flush or straight to stick around. If you check & raise from an early position, you’re in control of the poker table. And even if you get called, you have got a good idea about what they’re holding, AND forced them to push a lot of poker chips into the middle of the table just for trying to outdraw you.
Semi-bluffs
A semi-bluff is just what it sounds like. It’s not a complete bluff. You almost have a hand, you just need one more card. You make a bet or raise, knowing you need to pull the draw. The other players might throw in and you’ll win, but even if they don’t, you still might hit your draw and win that way. Say you’re holding Ad-10d and the flop is Ac-8d-3d. This gives you a flush draw with 9 cards still out. Whether you’re playing poker in a poker room at a casino or online, it is a handy tool. If everyone checks, keep betting even though your hand isn’t the best at that moment. Players with a low pair might fold. Even if they don’t, you have 9 chances to draw the flush and an additional 5 outs to win if you hit an Ace or a 10.
Step Up Your Texas Holdem Game
Step Up Your Texas Holdem Game
No matter good a Texas Holdem player you are (or think you are), everyone’s game can be improved. Whether you like to play in online poker rooms, hit casinos or just play with friends, here are a few ways you can improve your Texas Holdem game.
-
1.First, do just what you’re doing right now: read. There are lots of books on how to play Texas Holdem. And plenty of online poker rooms feature helpful articles. If you are brand new to Texas Holdem, you can learn Texas Holdem language, the terms and what they mean. If you’ve been playing for a while, you can learn new poker strategies. You might even find out about some new online poker rooms.
-
2.After you’ve read up on Texas Holdem, the next way to improve your game is to play. Like the old joke about the best way to get to Carnegie Hall: practice, practice, practice. As you play Texas Holdem, you build the skills that will improve your game. You know what strategies will work with which situation. You build your poker instincts and a lot of the game becomes automatic.
-
3.Once you’re feeling good about your game, raise the stakes. No more playing for nickels and dimes or at the free table at an online casino. When real money is involved players get serious. No more ridiculous bluffs. No more sticking around because you might pull a card. It takes the strategy and poker play to a different level. You will find more skilled players at the higher stakes tables. If you want to get better, you have to play against better poker players.
-
4.Even if you lose, keep playing. Everybody loses when they start out, even at video poker. And every time you step up in skill, you’re going to find more experienced players at the poker table. Keep going. If you feel like you’re giving away poker chips, think of them as tuition in Texas Holdem University. And these more skilled players who are taking your money are actually your poker coaches, training you to beat them in the future. So there are your tips: read about it, play it, and keep stepping up.

5. Don’t give up! I lost quite a substantial amount of money in my early days when I didn’t understand holdem. I’m still debating whether I have evened out yet. Each big loss was a lesson though. Without any of these losses, I’d never have become a modestly decent player.
-
6. Watch better players! If someone rocks your wallet for all you’ve got, see how they did it. Single out and analyze these opponents by trying to predict what they might have, and what their next play might be. Once you can do that, they are no longer the better player. 7. Throw down! Try different styles of play. It’s good to play tight as a beginner, but when you’re branching out, try being that aggressive freak who everyone knows is bluffing. Learn how other players react to individual styles of play, and how they react when you change from passive to aggressive. 8. Be a bastard! Hold ‘Em is ultimately about making money.
-
If you see a leak in someone’s game, exploit it! That player will learn his or her lesson eventually, as we all did. Make them pay to learn that lesson. If you ever start feeling guilty about taking some fool for all he’s worth, remember a time when it happened to you. Don’t feel bad anymore, do you? Its part of the game.
